In 1856, John Everett Millais painted two sisters resting in a meadow after a storm — itinerant beggars, worn down by the road, sheltering wherever the weather allows. The elder is blind. A handwritten sign hangs around her neck, the kind a passer-by would read before dropping a coin. She cannot see the double rainbow arcing behind her, or the butterfly that has settled, unnoticed, on the folds of her rust-coloured shawl. Her younger sister can see it all — she's turned to look, wide-eyed, while her sister feels only the last of the rain drying on her skin and the sun coming back.

It's a painting about beauty happening around someone who can't witness it, and about two people who have almost nothing, holding on to each other regardless.
